THE 19TH   JAPAN FILM FESTIVAL  LOS ANGELES 2024

Background

This festival was originally called “Chanoma Film Festival”, based on the theme of “Chanoma” – a family gathering place in the living room – and showcased heart warming films that portray the everyday life of a Japanese family. Because there is a desire that we want the American audience to know more about Japan and that this film festival will be used as a clue for Japanese filmmakers to go into the US, the name of the festival has been changed to “Japan Film Festival Los Angeles” since 2008. “Cinema” is the bridge that connects us all! We are convinced that through this festival, we can help strengthen the understanding of contemporary Japanese culture within American shores as well as encourage communication and the exchange of ideas between Japan and the U.S.

Purpose

1. Promotion of Japan-US cultural exchanges by screening Japanese films of carefully selected and high quality of various genres.

2. Support for Japanese film industry and film manufacturers to go into the US (Hollywood) and offer opportunities to screen.

3. Introduction of Japanese culture, actor, and films made by Japanese director in the US.

4. Vitalization of Japanese society in Southern California and participation in the community.

5. Presenting targets and supporting for Japanese film producers by setting up screening opportunities for independent movies.

Past Reports

Japan Film Festival Los Angeles(JFFLA) has been held for 17 times. In the beginning, it was an event that screened homey movies centered on director Junichi Suzuki, the advocate of this film festival. Currently, the committee members are mostly Japanese, and various films with the theme of Japanese culture and spiritual climate are widely screened. We welcome actors and directors. Also, we screen not only drama but also documentary, and those are including social theme or old ones.
